There are many causes of alopecia, the most common being androgenetic alopecia. This occurs in both men and women and is managed by systemic anti-androgen medication in women, DHT blocker in men and minoxidil both topical and systemic in both sexes. Hair transplantation is another option depending on the extent of loss, the response to treatment and the motivation of the patient.

Alopecia areata is a common form of hair loss. It occurs in about 3% of the population. Most cases are of limited extent called patchy alopecia areata with a smaller number of patients experiencing extensive loss that may involve the whole scalp (alopecia totalis) or the whole body (universalis). The most common treatment for the limited form in intralesional corticosteroid injections. For more extensive disease systemic steroids and steroid sparing immunosuppressive medications may be prescribed.

Other rarer forms of alopecia including idiopathic scarring alopecias. The most common form of these are frontal fibrosing alopecia, lichen planopilaris and discoid lupus erythematosus. These are often difficult conditions to treat.

Dr. Jack Green has extensive experience with the management of alopecia and has published widely in this area.
