Dermatitis is commonly seen by dermatologists and has several causes. A very common form particularly in children, is atopic dermatitis. This mostly improves as children get older but not always and unfortunately some adults continue to deal with this later in life. Other forms of dermatitis include seborrheic dermatitis which commonly affects the face and scalp. Dermatitis, particularly on the hands, can be caused by exogenous (external factors) as exposure to water, soaps and other irritants. This is commonly seen in the hands of those looking after young children or frequently performing house chores and also in nurses and hair dressers. This is call irritant contact dermatitis. Sometimes arrangements need to made to organise allergy testing to consider an allergic contact cause of the dermatitis.
This is usually with a combination of topical anti-inflammatory creams, emollients and advice about appropriate skin management. Phototherapy and systemic therapy may be indicated for some patients.
