Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating is a common condition that affects up to 2 to 5% of the population. It often arises out of puberty and can significantly affect patient quality of life.

Options for treatment include:

Topical anti-perspirants
Driclor is the strongest of this but can be irritating. Other milder options include Rexona Sport and Dove Clinical.
Topical compounded anti-cholinergic creams
e.g. glycopyrrolate cream
Systemic anti-cholinergic tablets
e.g. Ditropan (oxybutynin) or propantheline bromide
Iontophoresis
A topical treatment using a mild electrical current either at home or in clinic, using either water or an anti-cholinergic solution most suitable for treating sweaty hands or feet (palmoplantar hyperhidrosis).
miraDry
miraDry is a permanent ultrasound destruction specifically for armpit (axillary) sweating.
Endosocopic thoracic sympathectomy
A surgical procedure performed infrequently for intractable cases.
Botulinum toxin injections
  • Medicare subsidises up to 3 anti-sweat botulinum toxin treatments per year- only accessible by Specialist Dermatologists – this makes the cost considerably less at $450 out of pocket.
  • Several superficial injections into each armpit causing a mild sting- usually well tolerated.
  • Local numbing cream can be applied prior to the procedure.
  • Average interval between injections is six months.
  • Total quantity injected is 100 units although application can be made for more if necessary.
  • Side effects are rare and include bruising and swelling.
  • Exercise can be resumed 24 hours later.
  • Sweating will start to decrease by 70-100%, within 7 to 10 days.
